Intro

Michiru Oshima creates music that feels like it was discovered in a time capsule buried beneath a cathedral. Her sound is defined by a profound sense of space and a mastery of orchestral color, moving effortlessly from the thunderous, brass-led intensity of giant monster battles to the fragile, heart-aching simplicity of a single piano melody. There is a sacred, almost liturgical quality to her work, often utilizing choral elements and boy sopranos to create an atmosphere of otherworldly innocence.

What sets her apart is her ability to use silence and reverb as instruments. In scores like ICO, she strips away the clutter of typical game music to focus on the echo of footsteps and the lonely resonance of woodwinds. Even in her more maximalist anime scores, there is a distinct harmonic sophistication that betrays her classical training at Kunitachi College of Music, favoring complex string arrangements over simple pop-influenced hooks.

For those new to her work, the soundtrack to the game ICO is the essential starting point for her ambient, minimalist side, while the Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) score showcases her ability to write grand, tragic themes. If you want to hear her at her most powerful and cinematic, her work for the Godzilla franchise offers some of the most sophisticated kaiju music ever recorded.
