Abrasive, high-velocity industrial beats colliding with distorted vocals and classical foundations. Intense, cathartic electronic music for dark dancefloors.
Unter Null is the sound of a controlled explosion. It is music that occupies the jagged intersection of club-ready EBM rhythms and the raw, unhinged aggression of powernoise. The tracks are built on relentless, driving percussion that demands movement, but they are layered with a cold, digital grit that feels both futuristic and decaying. It is the sonic equivalent of a high-voltage wire snapping in a dark room: dangerous, bright, and deeply kinetic.
What truly sets Erica Dunham's work apart is the underlying musicality. Beneath the layers of bit-crushed vocals and distorted synths lies a sophisticated understanding of melody and structure, likely a byproduct of her classical training. While many of her peers in the aggrotech scene rely solely on shock and volume, Unter Null uses tension and release with surgical precision. The vocals range from whispered threats to guttural, processed screams, creating a sense of personal exorcism that feels authentic rather than performative.
For those new to the project, the mid-2000s material offers the perfect entry point into this world of dark electronics. It captures the peak of the 'harsh EBM' era while maintaining a distinct, melodic edge that makes the aggression palatable. It is music for those who find peace in high-decibel chaos and beauty in the breakdown of digital signals.
Unter Null, was founded as a solo aggrotech music project by Erica Dunham in 1998 at the age of 17, while living in Seattle, United States. As of 2012, she is based in Portland, Oregon. Dunham is trained in classical piano, cello and guitar. Live performances consist of Dunham on lead vocals, Brendin Ross (formerly of Bile) on keyboards and Krz Souls of Dawn of Ashes on e-percussion.
