Upupayāma

Upupayāma is the project of Italian multi-instrumentalist Alessio Ferrari, based in a secluded mountain village near Parma. This geographic isolation is central to the project's identity, manifesting as a 'pastoral psychedelic' sound that emphasizes organic textures over electronic artifice.

Ferrari handles the vast majority of instrumentation, including sitar, flute, and various percussion, creating a highly personal sonic world that feels both ancient and contemporary. His work is characterized by a blend of Eastern raga structures, 60s psych-folk, and the repetitive, hypnotic rhythms of German Krautrock. Critically, Upupayāma is noted for avoiding the 'retro-fetishism' trap; while the tools are analog and the influences are vintage, the compositions possess a modern clarity and a unique European folk sensibility. The project occupies a niche space alongside artists like Kikagaku Moyo or Causa Sui, where the focus is on long-form, immersive instrumental journeys that evoke specific natural landscapes.
