Urge Overkill

Polished 70s swagger meets 90s underground grit. It is the sound of a velvet-clad rock star playing a dive bar, equal parts irony and genuine arena-sized ambition.

Intro

Urge Overkill formed in Chicago in 1985, emerging from the same Steve Albini-adjacent noise-rock scene that birthed The Jesus Lizard, yet they quickly pivoted toward a highly stylized, retro-glam aesthetic. Their sound identity is built on the interplay between Nash Kato and Eddie Roeser, characterized by 'expensive-sounding' guitar tones and a fixation on 70s rock tropes, which they recontextualized for the alternative era.

Their career arc saw a steady climb through Touch and Go Records before signing to Geffen for their commercial peak, 'Saturation' (1993). Their cultural position was cemented by their inclusion on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, which gave them a global hit but also pigeonholed them as a 'soundtrack band.' Critically, they were often polarizing; some saw their irony as a refreshing break from grunge's dourness, while others viewed it as hollow. Influenced by Cheap Trick, The Cars, and David Bowie, they in turn influenced the 'cock rock' revival and the more polished side of 2000s indie rock. Despite a late-90s implosion due to internal friction and substance abuse, their legacy remains as one of the few bands to successfully bridge the gap between underground credibility and mainstream cinematic cool.
