Usurper

Formed in Chicago in 1993, Usurper carved out a unique niche in the American extreme metal underground by synthesizing the 'First Wave' black metal sound with traditional thrash and heavy metal. Unlike the second wave of black metal emerging from Norway at the time, Usurper looked backward to the primitive, riff-heavy approach of bands like Celtic Frost, Venom, and Mercyful Fate.

Their career arc is defined by a consistent refusal to follow trends, maintaining a 'Heavy Metal Horror' aesthetic across five full-length albums. Critically, they are respected as a bridge between the old school and the modern blackened thrash movement, influencing later acts like Witchery and Absu. Their lyrical focus on cryptozoology, paranormal phenomena, and ancient civilizations distinguishes them from the religious or political leanings of their contemporaries. Despite a hiatus in the late 2000s, their 2019 return with 'Lords of the Permafrost' proved their enduring relevance in the cult metal scene.
