Varathron

Varathron is a foundational pillar of the Hellenic black metal scene, formed in 1988 alongside contemporaries Rotting Christ and Necromantia. Their sound identity is defined by a rejection of the 'Norwegian' template; instead of cold, high-speed tremolo picking, Varathron utilizes warm, mid-tempo grooves, heavy metal-influenced riffing, and a deep emphasis on melody.

Their early work, particularly 'His Majesty at the Swamp,' is considered a genre-defining classic that established the 'swampy' and ritualistic atmosphere unique to the Greek region.
