Variety Lab

Variety Lab is a French electronic project led by Thierry Bellia, emerging in the early 2000s during the height of the French Touch and lounge movements. Unlike many of their contemporaries who relied solely on digital loops, Variety Lab integrated a core group of live musicians specializing in bass, keyboards, and vibraphone, giving their work a distinct nu-jazz and acid-jazz pedigree.

Their sound identity is built on the 'Variety' of French pop history, sampling and referencing the melodic exactitude of mid-century variety shows while grounding the music in house and downtempo rhythms. Their debut album, Providence (2002), established them as masters of the 'rainy day' aesthetic, particularly with the underground hit 'London in the Rain.' The project evolved with Team Up! (2009), which expanded their collaborative reach. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the commercial lounge scene of Stéphane Pompougnac and the more experimental, sample-heavy work of artists like Doctor Rockit. They remain a staple of sophisticated electronic music, valued by collectors for their high production values and ability to evoke specific urban moods without falling into genre cliches.
