Viking Skull emerged in 2002 from Corby, England, as a side project for members of the sludge-metal outfit Raging Speedhorn. Originally intended as a semi-comedic outlet to secure free alcohol at local venues, the band quickly evolved into a serious contender in the UK stoner metal scene.
Their sound is a distillation of 'biker rock' and classic heavy metal, heavily indebted to the riff-centric approach of Black Sabbath and the raw velocity of Motörhead. The band's history is marked by a revolving door of members, including Jess Margera of CKY, which helped bridge their sound to an international audience. Critically, they are viewed as 'cock-rockers' who eschew the intellectualism of modern metal in favor of visceral, blues-based aggression. Their cultural position is firmly rooted in the 'working man's metal' tradition, characterized by lyrical themes of hedonism and a sonic identity defined by Frank Regan's distinctive, whiskey-drenched vocal delivery. Despite several hiatuses, they remain a cult favorite for their uncompromising adherence to old-school rock and roll values.
