Glacial, down-tuned riffs colliding with haunting ambient textures. A masterclass in rhythmic tension and dark, Swedish folklore-inspired atmosphere.
Vildhjarta sounds like the weight of a mountain collapsing in slow motion. Their music is defined by a specific, suffocating density where ultra-low-tuned guitars provide a percussive, almost mechanical foundation. This isn't just heavy metal; it is a sonic architecture built on jarring silences and explosive, pitch-shifted impacts that feel like they are physically warping the air in the room.
What truly sets them apart is the 'thall' aesthetic: a unique blend of chaotic, math-metal rhythms and beautiful, shimmering clean guitar melodies that float above the carnage. They use dissonance not just for aggression, but to create a sense of ancient, folkloric mystery. The production is immaculately cold, favoring a digital precision that makes every snare hit and string snap feel surgically sharp against a backdrop of cavernous reverb.
Start with 'Måsstaden under vatten' to experience their most realized vision. It is a sprawling, cinematic journey that rewards deep listening, revealing intricate layers of melody hidden beneath the most punishing rhythmic structures in modern metal.
Vildhjarta is a Swedish progressive metal band from Hudiksvall, formed in 2005. The band plays in a Meshuggah-influenced djent-style employing heavily-down-tuned guitars, as well as harmonic minor chord progressions, jarring staccato riffs, and layers of reverberant guitars and atmospheres. The band currently consists of guitarist Calle Thomér, vocalist Vilhelm Bladin, and drummer Buster Odeholm. Since 2025, no original members remain in the band, with the longest-running member being Calle Thomér since joining in 2009. The group released a two-track demo entitled Omnislash in 2009 before they proceeded to sign with Century Media Records in 2011, spawning their debut album Måsstaden that same year. In 2013, they followed up with their first EP, Thousands of Evils, released on an exclusive 1,000-copy vinyl record run. Their second full-length album, Måsstaden under vatten, was released in October 2021. The word "vildhjärta" means "wildheart" in Swedish. The band's name was inspired by the name of an adventure module for the Swedish tabletop role-playing game Drakar och Demoner.
