Vinyl Williams

Vinyl Williams is the primary musical and visual outlet for Los Angeles-based artist Lionel Williams, the grandson of legendary film composer John Williams. Since 2007, the project has occupied a unique space at the intersection of neo-psychedelia, dream pop, and krautrock. Williams is a true polymath, often creating intricate, interactive 3D environments to accompany his albums, a practice that informs the 'celestial' and 'transcendental' qualities of his music. His sound identity is built on a foundation of motorik rhythms, heavily reverberated vocal harmonies, and dense, shimmering synth textures that evoke a sense of cosmic exploration.

Over the course of nine studio albums, Vinyl Williams has moved from the lo-fi, experimental origins of Trance Zen Dental Spa toward the more polished, hi-fi production of Brunei and Aeterna. His work is deeply influenced by the concept of 'hypnagogic pop' and the retro-futurist aesthetics of the 1960s and 70s, yet it remains firmly rooted in modern production techniques. Critically, he is often praised for his ability to balance pop hooks with avant-garde soundscapes, creating music that is both accessible and deeply immersive. He occupies a similar cultural space to artists like Melody's Echo Chamber and GUM, but with a more pronounced focus on the spiritual and architectural dimensions of sound.
