Explosive Australian grunge that pairs fuzzed-out guitars with slacker-pop melodies. High-energy anthems for suburban summer nights and sweaty basement shows.
Violent Soho captures the specific, sun-drenched grit of Australian suburban life. Their sound is a heavy, melodic revival of 90s alternative rock, characterized by massive guitar riffs that explode out of quiet, tension-filled verses. It feels like the heat of a Brisbane summer, dusty skate parks, and the restless energy of being young in a town where nothing ever happens.
What truly sets them apart is their 'stoner pop' sensibility. While the instrumentation is undeniably heavy and rooted in grunge, the vocal melodies are often surprisingly catchy and anthemic. Luke Boerdam’s distinctive, nasal delivery can shift from a laid-back drawl to a piercing scream in a heartbeat, perfectly mirroring the band's signature loud-quiet-loud structural shifts.
Start with 'Hungry Ghost' to hear the band at their peak of cultural dominance. It is the definitive document of modern Australian rock, blending raw aggression with undeniable hooks. From there, move to 'WACO' for a heavier, more psychedelic edge, or 'Everything Is A-OK' for a slightly more mature but no less defiant take on their signature sound.
Violent Soho were an Australian alternative rock band that was formed in 2004 in the Brisbane suburb of Mansfield, Queensland, originally under the name of "showroom". For the majority of the band's existence, the line-up was composed of Luke Boerdam (lead vocals, guitar), James Tidswell (guitar, backing vocals), Luke Henery (bass, backing vocals) and Michael Richards (drums, backing vocals). Their sound has been compared to that of 1980s and 1990s alternative rock bands such as the Pixies, Mudhoney, Smashing Pumpkins, and Nirvana. Although being largely described as grunge, the band self described themselves as a "stoner pop" band. The band's third studio album, Hungry Ghost, was certified Gold in Australia in September 2014. Their fourth album, Waco, debuted at number 1 on the Australian ARIA Charts in 2016. The band's fifth album, Everything Is A-OK, was released on 3 April 2020 and also debuted at number 1 on the ARIA charts.
