Grandiose symphonic doom that pairs operatic baritone vocals with full orchestral weight. Cinematic, mournful, and deeply emotional metal for dark, solitary nights.
Virgin Black sounds like the intersection of a high-mass requiem and a funeral doom wake. Their music is defined by a massive, cinematic scale where distorted guitars and double-bass drumming share equal space with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and professional choirs. It is music that feels heavy not just in its distortion, but in its emotional gravity, moving from delicate piano whispers to crushing walls of sound.
What truly sets them apart is Rowan London's vocal performance, which eschews typical metal tropes for a rich, mourning baritone that feels more at home in a 19th-century opera house than a dive bar. The interplay between Sesca Scaarba's mournful cello-like guitar lines and the complex, classical song structures creates a sense of 'Sombre Romanticism' that is rare in the genre. They don't just use strings as a backing track; they compose with them as a fundamental element of their identity.
Start with 'Elegant... and Dying' to experience their peak balance of gothic atmosphere and doom weight. For those who prefer the purely classical side, 'Requiem: Pianissimo' offers a stunning look at their songwriting stripped of metal elements, while 'Requiem: Fortissimo' provides the most aggressive, death-influenced version of their sound.
Virgin Black is an Australian symphonic gothic doom metal band. The band was signed to The End Records (for the United States) and Germany's Massacre Records (for Europe), through which it released four albums and one EP. A fifth album, originally planned for release in 2006, was released independently in 2018. As of 2021, they are signed to Australian record label, Dark Escapes Music. Formed in 1995 in Adelaide, they have achieved international acclaim during their career, receiving praise from such magazines as Orkus, Metal Hammer, Legacy and The Village Voice. Having changed their line-up several times, Virgin Black currently consists of the founding members and main songwriters: Sesca Scaarba (formerly Samantha Escarbe) (guitar) and Rowan London (keyboard, vocals), with Grayh (bass) and Luke Faz (drums) joining in 2007. The group explains the meaning of its name as "the juxtaposition of purity and humanity's darkness".
