Virgo Four, consisting of Merwyn Sanders and Eric Lewis, represents the sophisticated, 'deep' end of the first-wave Chicago house movement. Emerging in the late 1980s, they provided a crucial bridge between the raw energy of Trax Records-style jack tracks and the more emotive, melodic sensibilities that would later define deep house and even influence the UK's IDM scene.

Their sound identity is defined by a minimalist use of Roland hardware, specifically the TR-707 and TR-808 drum machines paired with warm, drifting polyphonic synths. Unlike many of their contemporaries who focused on dancefloor utility, Virgo Four's work possessed a narrative, almost cinematic quality. Their 1989 debut on Trax Records is widely considered a holy grail of the genre, though the duo remained relatively obscure until a massive critical reappraisal in the 2010s, spearheaded by the Rush Hour label's 'Resurrection' and 'Resurrection Edition' releases.
