Vomito Negro is a cornerstone of the Belgian Electronic Body Music (EBM) scene, formed in 1983 by Gin Devo and Guy Van Mieghem. Emerging from the same fertile ground as acts like Klinik and Front 242, they distinguished themselves through a more macabre, visceral thematic focus and a minimalist approach to sequencing.
Their sound identity is defined by the use of vintage analog hardware, particularly the TR-808 and various monophonic synths, processed through distortion to create a signature 'gritty' texture. Throughout the 80s and early 90s, they released seminal works such as 'Shock' and 'Human', which solidified their status as 'aural architects' of the industrial genre. After a hiatus in the early 2000s, Gin Devo revived the project in 2008, leaning into a darker, more atmospheric 'Death Sun' era that incorporated elements of dark ambient and modern techno while retaining the core EBM pulse. Critically, they are respected for their refusal to follow club trends, maintaining a grim, sarcastic lyrical edge that explores the darker facets of the human condition and mortality.
