High-energy symphonic disco that turns classical masterpieces into dancefloor anthems. Bold, brassy, and unapologetically theatrical instrumental funk.
Walter Murphy’s music is the sound of a 70-piece orchestra crashing a Studio 54 party. It is defined by a relentless, driving disco beat that serves as the foundation for soaring string sections and punchy, aggressive brass. There is a sense of grandiosity and 'high art' cheekiness, where the rigid structures of classical music are loosened up by funky basslines and shimmering synthesizers. It feels expensive, polished, and vibrantly alive.
What makes Murphy truly distinctive is his background as a jingle writer and TV arranger, which translates into a hyper-efficient sense of melody. He doesn't just cover classical songs; he re-engineers them for maximum immediate impact. The way he uses the Moog synthesizer to mimic or augment traditional orchestral instruments gives his work a unique retro-futurist sheen that separates him from standard big band or pure disco acts.
Start with 'A Fifth of Beethoven' to hear the definitive blueprint of his style. From there, explore his later television work on 'Family Guy' to see how his knack for orchestral comedy and big band swing evolved into a modern scoring powerhouse. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who loves the drama of a symphony but wants the groove of a nightclub.
Walter Anthony Murphy Jr. (born December 19, 1952) is an American composer, keyboardist, songwriter, and record producer. Further classical-disco fusions followed, such as "Flight '76", "Toccata and Funk in 'D' Minor" "Bolero", and "Mostly Mozart", but were not as successful. In a career spanning over five decades, Murphy has written music for numerous films and TV shows, including The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, The Savage Bees, Stingray, Wiseguy, The Commish, Profit, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Looney Tunes, and How Murray Saved Christmas.
