WIFE

WIFE is the electronic solo project of Irish multi-instrumentalist James Kelly, best known as the founder of the influential experimental black metal band Altar of Plagues. This project represents a significant pivot from extreme metal to avant-garde electronics, though it retains the bleak, uncompromising emotional core of his previous work.

Debuting with the Stoic EP in 2012, Kelly quickly aligned himself with the Tri Angle Records aesthetic, a label synonymous with the 'dark R&B' and 'witch house' adjacent movements of the early 2010s. His sound identity is defined by a sophisticated use of field recordings, found sounds, and digital synthesis, often processed to create a sense of physical decay or environmental pressure. Critically, WIFE is viewed as a bridge between the industrial techno scene and the more melodic, vocal-driven world of experimental pop. The involvement of producers like Bobby Krlic (The Haxan Cloak) on his debut LP solidified his position within a specific niche of 'heavy' electronic music that prioritizes texture and atmosphere over traditional dancefloor utility.
