Dense, sludge-heavy riffs meet raw vocal intensity. This is the sound of Sacramento's underground: dark, dissonant, and physically heavy music for cathartic release.
Will Haven is a cornerstone of the Sacramento heavy music scene, emerging in 1995 from the ashes of the band Sock. Led by guitarist Jeff Irwin and vocalist Grady Avenell, the band carved out a unique space between sludge metal, noise rock, and post-hardcore.
Their sound is characterized by Irwin's signature use of dissonance and feedback, paired with Avenell's distinctive, strained vocal delivery. Unlike many of their metalcore contemporaries, Will Haven avoided melodic choruses in favor of a relentless, atmospheric density. Their early work, particularly 'El Diablo' and 'WHVN', established them as a 'band's band,' earning them tours with Deftones and Soulfly. Despite a hiatus in the early 2000s and several lineup shifts, the band has maintained a remarkably consistent aesthetic across seven albums, culminating in the critically acclaimed 'VII'. They are often cited as a primary influence on the 'Deftones-adjacent' sound, prioritizing mood and sonic weight over technical flash.
