Polished, intimate pop with a theatrical heart. Vulnerable acoustic arrangements and soaring falsetto for quiet mornings and reflective walks.
William Beckett’s solo work is a masterclass in the 'unplugged' transition, trading the jagged energy of mid-2000s emo-rock for a sophisticated, chamber-pop sensibility. It sounds like a secret shared in a quiet room; the production is clean and warm, often centering on a crisp acoustic guitar or a melodic piano line that allows his distinctive, elastic voice to take center stage. There is a shimmering, almost cinematic quality to the arrangements that feels both expansive and deeply personal.
What sets Beckett apart is his ability to retain the sharp, clever lyricism of his pop-punk roots while delivering it with the grace of a classic crooner. His use of falsetto is particularly striking, used not just for high notes but as a tool for emotional vulnerability. The music often incorporates subtle textures like glockenspiel, tambourine, and layered vocal harmonies that give the tracks a 'hand-crafted' feel, far removed from the digital sheen of his earlier collaborations.
Start with 'Genuine & Counterfeit' to hear the full realization of this sound. It’s the perfect entry point for anyone who grew up on the Fueled by Ramen era but now finds themselves reaching for something more contemplative and mature. It’s music for the 'after' - after the party, after the breakup, or after you’ve finally found some peace.
William Beckett (born February 11, 1985) is an American musician who is the lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the Chicago-based rock band The Academy Is..., who signed to Atlantic Records/Fueled by Ramen/Decaydance Records. While still in high school in 2003, Beckett and guitarist Mike Carden came together from rival bands in Chicago to form The Academy Is... In addition to founding the band, Beckett and Carden are credited as the primary songwriters. A third core member of the band was Adam Siska, Beckett's classmate and friend from Barrington High School. In 2007, Alex Davies from the BBC described Beckett as a mix of Adam Lazzara and Prince, labeling him "utterly captivating". The Academy Is... reunited at Riot Fest 2015 in Chicago. Although Beckett had said the occasion would serve as a "farewell" show, the band later embarked on an additional final tour later in the year.
