Wino

Gritty, soul-baring doom that feels like a long ride on a vintage chopper. Heavy riffs and weather-beaten vocals for the lonely road and the late-night reflection.

Intro

Listening to Wino is like sitting across from a man who has seen everything and survived most of it. The music is anchored by a thick, analog warmth that feels deeply physical, whether it is coming from a wall of amplifiers or a single acoustic guitar. It is the sound of heavy metal stripped of its theater and reduced to its most honest, blues-driven core. There is a sense of weight here, not just in the tuning of the strings, but in the emotional gravity of the performance.

What sets this apart is the intersection of biker-culture grit and a surprising, vulnerable spirituality. Wino's guitar work is legendary for its fluid, wah-heavy solos that bridge the gap between 70s psychedelic rock and the crushing slow-burn of traditional doom. His voice, a gravelly baritone, carries the wear and tear of decades on the road, lending an undeniable authenticity to songs about struggle, freedom, and the search for meaning in the dirt.

Start with Punctuated Equilibrium to hear the full-throttle power of his electric trio work, then move to Adrift to experience the haunting, skeletal beauty of his acoustic side. It is essential listening for anyone who believes that heavy music should have a soul and a story to tell.

Robert Scott Weinrich (born 1961), better known as Wino, is an American singer and guitarist. He has been highly influential in helping develop and codify doom metal's trademark sound, and is also considered an influential figure in the stoner rock and punk rock genre. Weinrich started his first band Warhorse in 1976, which would later become The Obsessed. In 1986 he joined doom metal band Saint Vitus, where he performed on four studio albums, including their most iconic effort Born Too Late. He has also released three solo albums since 2009.
