Within Temptation

Within Temptation is a cornerstone of the Dutch symphonic metal scene, evolving from the doom and gothic metal underground of the mid-90s into an international powerhouse. Founded by Sharon den Adel and Robert Westerholt, the band's early work on 'Enter' utilized the 'beauty and the beast' vocal dynamic common in gothic metal, but they quickly pivoted toward a more melodic, female-led symphonic sound with the breakthrough album 'Mother Earth'.

This record introduced Celtic and folk influences that defined their early 2000s identity. As they progressed, albums like 'The Silent Force' and 'The Heart of Everything' leaned into high-gloss production and cinematic orchestration, often collaborating with full orchestras. In the 2010s, the band experimented with transmedia storytelling and incorporated alternative rock and electronic elements, moving away from traditional metal tropes. They are critically noted for their versatility and den Adel's distinctive soprano, which avoids the stereotypical operatic 'diva' style for a more versatile, pop-adjacent delivery.
