Yen Town Band is a seminal Japanese musical project originally conceived as a fictional band for Shunji Iwai's 1996 cult film 'Swallowtail Butterfly'. The group is a collaboration between three titans of Japanese culture: vocalist Chara, director/lyricist Shunji Iwai, and producer Takeshi Kobayashi.
Their debut album, 'Montage', topped the Oricon charts, a rare feat for a soundtrack-based fictional entity. The project is characterized by Chara's 'whisper-squeak' vocal style and Kobayashi's signature production, which blends organic instrumentation with a sophisticated, slightly melancholic pop sensibility. Historically, Yen Town Band served as a precursor to other Iwai-Kobayashi collaborations, most notably the Lily Chou-Chou project.
