High-velocity California hardcore with a surprising melodic heart. Anthemic, community-driven punk for long drives and basement circle pits.
Youth Brigade sounds like the exact midpoint between the raw aggression of early 80s hardcore and the melodic accessibility that would later define the SoCal skate punk explosion. Their music is characterized by a relentless, driving rhythm section and guitars that alternate between jagged, percussive downstrokes and bright, soaring leads. It is the sound of a DIY community coming together, captured in a room that smells like stale beer and amplifier heat.
What sets them apart is the 'Stern brothers' factor. Because the core of the band is family, there is a telepathic tightness to their transitions and a specific quality to their vocal harmonies that feels more like a collective shout than a polished arrangement. Unlike many of their nihilistic contemporaries, Youth Brigade often infused their protest music with a sense of optimism and social responsibility, reflected in their founding of the Better Youth Organization.
Start with 'Sound & Fury' to hear the definitive blueprint of early 80s Los Angeles hardcore. It captures the band at their most urgent and unvarnished. From there, move to 'Happy Hour' to hear how they matured into a more melodic, structured sound without losing the fire that made them essential in the first place.
Youth Brigade is an American hardcore punk band formed in Hollywood, Los Angeles, in 1980 by brothers Mark, Adam, and Shawn Stern. The band then founded BYO (Better Youth Organization). Many later punk bands cite Youth Brigade as an influence, including The Nation of Ulysses and The Briefs. Youth Brigade have released five studio albums including one released as The Brigade. Four of their five albums feature the band's original lineup, Mark, Adam, and Shawn Stern. Bassist Bob Gnarly replaced Adam for the recording of 1985's The Dividing Line, released as The Brigade. Adam returned in 1991 when the band reunited) and contributed to the band's 1992 EP Come Again and their next two albums Happy Hour and To Sell the Truth before leaving again in 2007. Youth Brigade continue to tour, although other than six tracks on the 1999 album BYO Split Series Volume II, they have not released a full-length studio album since To Sell the Truth in 1996.
