Zé Ramalho

Deep, gravelly vocals meet psychedelic folk from the Brazilian backlands. A mystical, dusty sound that feels like ancient prophecies told over a distorted guitar.

Intro

Zé Ramalho sounds like the voice of a desert prophet echoing through a canyon. His music is a heavy, atmospheric blend of Northeastern Brazilian rhythms and 1970s psychedelic rock, anchored by a baritone so deep it feels tectonic. It is dusty, sun-baked, and deeply rooted in the soil of Paraiba, yet it reaches for the stars with swirling synthesizers and fuzz-drenched guitar solos.

What makes him truly distinctive is his 'Northeastern Gothic' sensibility. He weaves together the tradition of 'cordel' poetry with biblical imagery and sci-fi mysticism, creating a sonic world where folk legends and apocalyptic visions coexist. While his peers in the MPB movement often leaned toward jazz or pop, Ramalho maintained a gritty, almost occult edge that feels both ancient and futuristic.

Start with 'A Peleja do Diabo com o Dono do Céu' to hear his vision at its most potent. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who loves the dark folk of Leonard Cohen or the desert-baked psych of the 13th Floor Elevators, but wants to hear those energies filtered through a uniquely Brazilian lens.

Zé Ramalho (born José Ramalho Neto on October 3, 1949 – Brejo do Cruz, Paraíba, Brazil) is a Brazilian composer and performer. Zé Ramalho has collaborated with various major Brazilian musicians, including Vanusa, Geraldo Azevedo and Alceu Valença. As with many musicians back in his younger days, he was first influenced by rock and roll; however, at the age of 20, his music took a more traditional Northeastern Brazilian approach. Zé Ramalho's lyrics however, are very influenced by the socio-economic difficulties faced by the average Brazilian. Zé Ramalho is the first cousin of Elba Ramalho, a Brazilian composer and performer.
