Zeal & Ardor

Chain-gang chants and delta blues collide with the icy fury of black metal. A defiant, soul-stirring ritual for those who want their heaviness with a history.

Intro

Zeal & Ardor sounds like a fever dream where the history of American roots music is rewritten through the lens of extreme metal. It begins with the rhythmic, hypnotic clinking of chains and the soulful call-and-response of a chain gang, only to be shattered by the sudden, violent arrival of blast beats and distorted tremolo picking. The transition between these worlds is not a blend but a collision, creating a sound that feels both ancient and dangerously modern.

What makes Manuel Gagneux's project truly distinctive is the conceptual 'what if' at its core: what if American slaves had turned to Satanism instead of Christianity? This narrative tension fuels the music, making the gospel elements feel subversive and the black metal elements feel grounded in a tangible, earthly pain. The production often flirts with lo-fi aesthetics, giving the chants a ghostly, archival quality that makes the subsequent metal outbursts feel even more visceral.

Start with the debut album 'Devil Is Fine' to hear the rawest execution of this concept. It is short, punchy, and immediately establishes the band's unique vocabulary. From there, move to 'Stranger Fruit' for a more polished, expansive take on the sound that incorporates Motown influences and more complex industrial textures.

Zeal & Ardor is a Swiss avant-garde metal band started and led by Manuel Gagneux, a Swiss-American musician who had previously created a chamber pop project called Birdmask. Formed in 2013, the band mixes sounds of African-American spirituals with black metal. Initially a solo project, the band signed with MVKA Records in 2016 and expanded to a full lineup, with Gagneux on vocals and guitar, backing vocalists Denis Wagner and Marc Obrist, guitarist Tiziano Volante, bassist Mia Rafaela Dieu, drummer Marco Von Allmen. Dieu was later replaced by Lukas Kurmann. Zeal & Ardor have released the albums Devil Is Fine (2016), Stranger Fruit (2018), Zeal & Ardor (2022), and Greif (2024), as well as a demo album Zeal and Ardor (2014). In 2020, they released their first EP, Wake of a Nation.
