Zen is a cornerstone of the Peruvian alternative rock scene, formed in Lima in 2002. Led by charismatic frontman Jhovan Tomasevich, the band quickly rose to prominence during the Latin alternative boom of the early 2000s.
Their sound is heavily influenced by the post-grunge and hard rock movements of North America, yet it maintains a distinct identity through Spanish-language lyricism focused on existential themes and urban isolation. Their debut album earned them an MTV Latin America nomination, cementing their status as international representatives of Peruvian rock. After a hiatus starting in 2009, the band reunited in 2013, shifting toward a more polished, contemporary rock sound on 'Aquí y ahora'. Critically, they are praised for their technical proficiency and Tomasevich's vocal range. They occupy a cultural space similar to Libido or Mar de Copas, serving as a bridge between the raw underground scene and mainstream radio success in Peru.
