Zombies — Cassette

Intro

Zombies were a pivotal Spanish new wave and synth-pop group led by the prodigy Bernardo Bonezzi. Emerging from the seminal punk collective Kaka de Luxe, Bonezzi formed Zombies in 1979 to explore a more sophisticated, electronic-forward sound.

Their aesthetic was heavily influenced by the glam-rock of David Bowie and the art-pop sensibilities of Brian Eno, which they successfully translated into a Spanish context during the 'Movida Madrileña' cultural explosion. Their 1980 single 'Groenland' became a generational anthem, defining the sound of the era with its infectious synth hooks and surrealist lyrics. Critically, they are viewed as the bridge between the amateurish energy of early Spanish punk and the polished, commercially viable pop-rock that dominated the mid-80s. Despite a short lifespan (disbanding in 1982), their influence persists in the lineage of Spanish indie and electronic music. Note: This artist is frequently confused with the 1960s British rock band The Zombies; however, this entity is strictly the Spanish new wave group active from 1979-1982.
