Zulu

Zulu is a Los Angeles-based hardcore collective that has redefined the boundaries of the genre by integrating elements of soul, funk, and hip-hop into a traditional powerviolence framework. Formed by Anaiah Lei, the band emerged as a vital voice in the 'New Wave of American Hardcore,' specifically centering Black identity and history within a subculture that has historically struggled with representation.

Their sound identity is built on extreme contrasts: ultra-fast blast beats and sludge-heavy breakdowns are frequently interrupted by crate-dug samples of 70s soul or original jazz passages. This 'collage' approach to songwriting serves a dual purpose, acting as both a sonic signature and a thematic exploration of Black joy and struggle. Critically, they are lauded for their ability to maintain the visceral intensity of hardcore while expanding its musical vocabulary. They sit at the center of a contemporary scene alongside acts like Gel and Jesus Piece, but remain distinct due to their experimental production and explicit focus on social commentary.
