100 Lovers

Released in 2011, '100 Lovers' represents DeVotchKa at their most polished and cinematically ambitious. Following the massive success of their work on the 'Little Miss Sunshine' soundtrack, the band traveled to Arizona to record with producer Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Neko Case). This geographic shift is audible in the record's 'Southwestern Noir' palette, which integrates more desert-rock textures than their earlier, more Balkan-influenced work. The album features a more prominent use of percussion and brass, leaning into a sound that echoes the spaghetti western scores of Ennio Morricone while maintaining the band's signature chamber-folk intimacy. Critics noted that while it moved away from the raw punk-cabaret energy of their debut, it replaced it with a sophisticated, widescreen production that solidified their status as masters of the 'cinematic folk' niche. It remains a pivotal bridge between their indie-rock roots and their later, more purely orchestral endeavors.
