Pillar of Na

Released in 2018, Pillar of Na represents the creative peak of Saintseneca's collaboration with producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes). While their previous work leaned into the 'folk punk' aesthetic of their Columbus, Ohio roots, this album is a deliberate move toward 'art folk' and chamber-pop sophistication. The title references the biblical story of Lot’s wife, setting a tone of looking back, memory, and transformation that permeates the lyrics. Musically, the album is notable for its use of polyphonic vocal arrangements and a vast array of instruments that create a 'wall of folk' sound. The centerpiece is the nearly nine-minute title track, which serves as a progressive-folk suite. Critics noted the album's successful balance of catchy, melodic hooks with challenging, avant-garde structures, cementing Zac Little's reputation as one of the most ambitious songwriters in the contemporary indie-folk scene.
