Released in early 1999 (though appearing in late 1998 in some territories), '1999' is the debut studio album by Philippe Zdar and Hubert 'Boombass' Blanc-Francard under the name Cassius. Following their work as La Funk Mob and Zdar's involvement in Motorbass, this album solidified the 'French Touch' sound alongside Daft Punk and Air. The record is famous for its heavy use of the E-mu SP-1200 sampler and its distinctive 'filtered' production style, which involves sweeping low-pass filters over disco and funk samples to create a sense of tension and release. Critically, it was hailed as a masterpiece of the genre, with NME and Pitchfork noting its seamless integration of hip-hop production techniques into a house music framework. The title track and 'Feeling for You' became massive international hits, defining the sound of European clubs at the turn of the millennium.
