Released in 1980, Absolutely is the pivotal second studio album by Madness, solidifying their status as the premier crossover act of the 2 Tone ska movement. Following the massive success of One Step Beyond..., the band avoided the 'sophomore slump' by deepening their lyrical themes while sharpening their pop sensibilities. The album peaked at number 2 on the UK charts and produced three top-ten singles. Musically, it marks a transition from the raw, dance-focused ska of their debut toward a more complex 'Nutty Sound' that incorporated elements of music hall, vaudeville, and classic British pop. Tracks like 'Embarrassment' addressed serious social issues like racial tension within families, while 'Baggy Trousers' became a definitive anthem of British school life.
