Alexisonfire

Released on Halloween in 2002, the self-titled debut from St. Catharines, Ontario's Alexisonfire is a foundational text of the Canadian post-hardcore scene. Recorded on a shoestring budget, the album's sonic character is defined by its 'raw' aesthetic, featuring a mix that favors the natural, uncompressed energy of the band's live performance. Unlike the more streamlined emo-pop of the era, Alexisonfire utilized a unique three-vocalist system that allowed for complex narrative layering. The album was a sleeper hit, eventually becoming the first debut on an independent Canadian label to be certified Gold. It established the band's signature 'Skulls and Bones' imagery and their penchant for long, eccentric song titles. Critically, it is often cited as a bridge between the underground screamo movement of the late 90s and the more melodic post-hardcore that dominated the mid-2000s.
