Am Universum

Released in 2001, Am Universum is the fifth studio album by Amorphis and marks the peak of their 'psychedelic' phase. Following the stylistic shift of Tuonela, this record completely abandoned the death growls of their early career in favor of a vocal-driven, progressive rock approach. Recorded at Finnvox Studios, the album is notable for its rich, layered production and the prominent guest appearance of multi-instrumentalist Sakari Kukko, whose saxophone work provides a unique sonic signature. While the band's earlier work was deeply rooted in the Kalevala, Am Universum moves toward more abstract, personal, and cosmic lyrical themes. It remains a polarizing but highly respected entry in their discography, representing a fearless departure from genre expectations before the band eventually pivoted back toward a more melodic death metal sound with the arrival of Tomi Joutsen in 2006.
