Released in 2003, Autóctono is the sophomore effort from Ars Amandi and arguably the album that solidified their 'Castilian Rock' identity. While the global folk metal scene was often preoccupied with Nordic mythology, Ars Amandi looked to the heart of Spain, specifically the region of Castilla. The defining characteristic of this album is the prominent use of the dulzaina and the pito castellano, traditional woodwinds that provide a piercing, melodic counterpoint to the heavy metal foundation. This record moved the band beyond their debut by refining the integration of these folk elements, ensuring they weren't just gimmicks but the primary drivers of the songwriting. Critically, it is often cited as a cornerstone of Spanish folk metal, praised for its authenticity and its refusal to adopt the 'symphonic' tropes of its contemporaries. The album features a mix of high-tempo anthems and more contemplative, mid-tempo tracks that explore social themes and regional pride, culminating in a cover of Triana's 'Abre la puerta niña' that pays homage to the roots of Spanish rock.
