Behind Silence and Solitude

Behind Silence and Solitude is the 2002 debut studio album by All That Remains, released on Prosthetic Records. At this stage, the band functioned primarily as a melodic death metal act, heavily influenced by the 'Gothenburg sound' of bands like At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity. It features the original lineup including guitarist Oli Herbert, whose neoclassical shredding and melodic sensibilities would remain a cornerstone of the band until his death. Unlike their breakout success 'The Fall of Ideals', this record features almost no 'pop' sensibility; the clean vocals are sparse and used for atmospheric effect rather than radio hooks. The production, handled by Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage, is notably more primitive than his later work, giving the album a cult-classic, underground feel. It stands as a vital document of the early 2000s New Wave of American Heavy Metal, showcasing a technical proficiency that was rare in the metalcore scene at the time.
