Blank-Wave Arcade

Released in 1999, Blank-Wave Arcade marks the pivotal transformation of The Faint from a standard indie rock outfit into the architects of a new dance-punk movement. Following their debut 'Media', the band pivoted sharply toward synthesizers, heavily influenced by the darker corners of New Wave and Post-Punk. This album served as a bridge for the Saddle Creek label, proving that the Omaha scene could produce aggressive electronic music alongside its famous folk and emo exports. Recorded with a focus on analog textures, the album's production is characterized by its 'thin' but piercing sound, utilizing distorted keyboards to provide both melody and percussion. While it received mixed reviews upon release, often being compared unfavorably to its influences, it has since been recognized as a foundational text for the early 2000s 'indie-sleaze' and electro-clash eras. It is notably shorter and more abrasive than its successor, 'Danse Macabre', retaining a raw, demo-like energy that defines its unique character.
