Cell-0 marks a significant milestone for Apocalyptica as their first fully instrumental album in seventeen years. Released in 2020, it represents a 'back to basics' philosophy that paradoxically pushed the band into more progressive territory. By self-producing the record, the band bypassed label pressures for radio-friendly vocal tracks, allowing for sprawling compositions like the nearly ten-minute title track. The recording at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki captured a dense, layered sound that emphasizes the percussive and rhythmic capabilities of the cello.
