Requiem for the Indifferent

Requiem for the Indifferent, released in 2012, represents Epica's fifth studio effort and a pivot toward more complex, progressive structures. Following the success of Design Your Universe, the band doubled down on their 'The Quantum Enigma' philosophy, blending scientific and social themes with their signature symphonic sound. Recorded at Gate Studio with producer Sascha Paeth, the album is notable for its increased use of Middle Eastern scales and a more prominent role for the choir as a rhythmic element. It also marks the final appearance of bassist Yves Huts. Critics often point to this album as one of the band's most challenging listens due to its dense layering and longer track lengths, specifically the nearly ten-minute closer.
