CMYK EP

Released in May 2010 on R&S Records, the CMYK EP served as the definitive manifesto for the 'post-dubstep' movement. While James Blake had already released several well-received singles, this EP synthesized his influences - UK garage, dubstep, and classic R&B - into a singular, highly influential aesthetic. The title track famously samples Kelis and Aaliyah, but rather than using them for hooks, Blake deconstructs them into rhythmic elements, a technique that would be widely imitated throughout the decade. Critically, the EP was a watershed moment; Pitchfork awarded it 'Best New Music,' praising its ability to be both physically imposing and emotionally resonant. Resident Advisor noted its role in pushing the boundaries of bass music toward a more experimental, 'wonky' territory. Unlike his later self-titled LP, which leaned into singer-songwriter tropes, CMYK remains a production-focused masterpiece of syncopation and sub-frequency manipulation, marking the peak of his early, club-adjacent experimentation.
