Dog in the Fog

Released in 2012 as a digital-only EP, Dog in the Fog serves as a crucial bridge and expansion of the sonic world Daniel Lopatin established on his 2011 masterpiece Replica. The EP features two distinct edits of the title track 'Replica' alongside remixes by heavyweights Surgeon and Richard Youngs. While the original Replica album was celebrated for its use of 1980s and 90s television commercial samples to create a 'hauntological' pop-ambient hybrid, Dog in the Fog pushes those sounds into more diverse directions. The Matmos edit introduces a more clinical, glitch-heavy approach to the source material, while Surgeon's remix of 'Remember' provides a rare glimpse of OPN's work being reinterpreted through the lens of minimalist, industrial techno. Richard Youngs' take on 'Nassau' strips the track back to its most essential, haunting elements. This release is significant for showing how Lopatin's highly specific aesthetic could be successfully dismantled and rebuilt by other experimental pioneers, solidifying his influence within the broader electronic landscape of the 2010s.
