Cold Spring Harbor

Released in 1971, Cold Spring Harbor serves as the foundational, albeit troubled, debut of Billy Joel. Recorded following his departure from the heavy psych duo Attila and a period of clinical depression, the album is a stark collection of folk-rock and piano ballads. It is historically defined by a technical catastrophe: the original mastering was done at the wrong speed, resulting in a pitch-shifted 'chipmunk' effect on Joel's vocals. This error led to a lifelong rift between Joel and producer Artie Ripp. Despite the technical flaws, the songwriting is remarkably mature, featuring the original versions of 'She's Got a Way' and 'Everybody Loves You Now.' The album's tone is significantly more somber and 'chamber-folk' than his subsequent Columbia Records output, leaning into baroque pop influences and introspective, often existential lyrics.
