Released in 1981, Computerwelt (Computer World) is widely considered Kraftwerk's most influential work, serving as a primary catalyst for the development of techno, electro, and hip-hop. Recorded at their Kling Klang Studio in Düsseldorf, the album moved away from the travel-based themes of previous records to focus on the burgeoning information age. The lyrical content is eerily prescient, touching on global surveillance, digital banking, and computer-mediated romance decades before they became societal norms. Musically, the album is defined by the use of the Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 and custom-built sequencers, creating a sound that is more rhythmically complex and 'funky' than their earlier work.
