Released in 1975, Radio-Aktivität (Radio-Activity) marks a pivotal moment in Kraftwerk's evolution, being the first album they recorded entirely at their Kling Klang Studio and the first to feature the 'classic' lineup of Hütter, Schneider, Bartos, and Flür. It is a concept album that plays on the German word 'Radioaktivität,' referencing both nuclear radioactivity and the activity of radio broadcasting. Sonically, it is a departure from the flute-heavy krautrock of their early years and the driving 'motorik' beat of Autobahn, opting instead for a more static, atmospheric, and experimental approach. The album is notable for its heavy use of the vocoder and the Vako Orchestron, which provided the choir and string sounds that give the record its melancholic, ethereal quality.
