Conquer

Released in 2008, Conquer represents a significant hardening of Soulfly's sound. Following the dark path set by its predecessor, Dark Ages, Max Cavalera explicitly cited death metal and grindcore legends like Napalm Death and Slayer as primary influences. The result is an album that many critics noted was 'tighter and heavier' than his side project Cavalera Conspiracy. Mixed by the legendary Andy Sneap, the album possesses a high-fidelity crunch that highlights the technicality of guitarist Marc Rizzo while maintaining the raw, tribal energy of the rhythm section. It features notable guest appearances, including Dave Peters of Throwdown. The album is structurally diverse, ranging from three-minute thrash blasts to the seven-minute doom-laden 'Touching the Void', and concludes with the traditional instrumental 'Soulfly VI', maintaining the band's signature tradition of melodic, spiritual closers.
