Recorded in 1999 and released in 2000, Coruscating represents a peak in John Surman's long association with the ECM label. While Surman had previously experimented with solo recordings and electronic textures, this album finds him in a purely acoustic setting, backed by the Trans4mation string quartet and bassist Chris Laurence. The project bridges the gap between contemporary jazz improvisation and European classical tradition, specifically echoing the pastoral moods of English composers like Vaughan Williams or Benjamin Britten, but filtered through a jazz lens.
