Dauði Baldrs

Released in 1997, Dauði Baldrs represents a total stylistic pivot for Varg Vikernes, moving from the atmospheric black metal that defined his early career into pure ambient and dungeon synth. The album's sonic character was dictated by its recording context: Vikernes was serving a prison sentence and was restricted to using only a synthesizer and a basic tape recorder. This resulted in a monophonic, MIDI-adjacent sound that polarized fans of his previous work. The album is a concept piece detailing the death of the god Baldr and the lead-up to Ragnarök, with each track corresponding to a part of the myth. While critically divisive due to its 'toy-like' instrumentation, it has since become a foundational text for the dungeon synth genre, praised for its ability to create immense atmosphere through extreme minimalism and repetition. It is the first of two 'prison albums' that eschewed the metal genre entirely.
