Burzum

Hypnotic, lo-fi black metal and primitive synth drones that feel like a solitary winter in the Norwegian woods. Minimalist, repetitive, and deeply atmospheric.

Intro

Burzum is the solo project of Varg Vikernes, a central and highly controversial figure in the early 1990s Norwegian black metal scene. Musically, Burzum departed from the thrash-influenced speed of its contemporaries to pioneer a more atmospheric, minimalist approach.

The project's sound identity is defined by high-gain, lo-fi guitar distortion, repetitive song structures, and a focus on Norse mythology and Tolkien-inspired fantasy rather than traditional satanism. Vikernes' career is sharply divided by his incarceration from 1994 to 2009, during which he shifted to purely electronic dark ambient music due to prison restrictions. This era inadvertently helped birth the 'dungeon synth' genre. Despite Vikernes' personal history and extremist political views, the music itself remains a foundational influence on atmospheric black metal, DSBM (Depressive Suicidal Black Metal), and post-metal, cited by artists ranging from Wolves in the Throne Room to Mount Eerie. Critical consensus views Burzum as a masterclass in using limited technical means to achieve maximum atmospheric immersion.
