Deep Forest

Released in 1992, Deep Forest's self-titled debut was a pivotal moment for the 'World Music' and 'Electronic' genres, successfully commercializing the use of ethnomusicological samples within a pop-ambient framework. Produced by Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez, the album famously utilized recordings of UNESCO-documented pygmy chants from central Africa, most notably on the hit single 'Sweet Lullaby.' While the album faced later scrutiny regarding the ethics of sampling indigenous voices, its sonic impact was undeniable, helping to define the 'ethnic electronica' sound that would dominate 90s coffee shops and soundtracks. Sonically, it bridges the gap between the New Age movements of the 80s and the burgeoning Trip-Hop and Downtempo scenes of the 90s.
