Deep Forest

Deep Forest, primarily the project of French musicians Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez, was a pivotal force in the 1990s 'ethnic electronica' movement. Their 1992 debut revolutionized the use of field recordings in popular music, specifically by integrating Baka Pygmy chants from central Africa into a downtempo, ambient-house framework.

This approach achieved massive commercial success, moving over 10 million units and influencing a wave of similar acts like Enigma and Sacred Spirit. Their sound identity is defined by lush synth pads, sophisticated sampling techniques, and a focus on the melodic potential of non-Western vocal traditions. Over their career, they evolved from the rainforest-inspired debut to the Eastern European folk focus of Boheme and the Latin-influenced Comparsa. While they faced critical scrutiny regarding the ethics of sampling indigenous voices, their work is credited with bringing global traditional music to a mainstream audience and pioneering the 'chillout' aesthetic that dominated late-90s electronic music. Sanchez's departure in 2005 shifted the project toward Mouquet's solo vision, which continues to explore regional collaborations under the Deep Forest banner.
