Dictator

Released in 2018, Dictator is the second studio album by Daron Malakian and Scars on Broadway, though it was largely recorded years earlier in 2012. The album is a true solo effort, with Malakian performing all instruments - including drums, bass, and keys - giving the record a cohesive, singular intensity. Sonically, it serves as a spiritual successor to the later work of System of a Down, characterized by Malakian's 'manic' songwriting style which blends thrash metal, punk, and Middle Eastern folk influences. The lyrical themes are heavily political, touching on the Armenian Genocide (Lives) and modern authoritarianism (Dictator), while also exploring personal disillusionment. The album includes a notable cover of Skinny Puppy's 'Assimilate' and a tribute to Greek singer Stamatis Kokotas. Critics noted that while it lacks the collaborative friction of a full band, it excels as a showcase for Malakian's idiosyncratic genius and his ability to craft infectious, heavy hooks out of chaotic energy.
